Transforming Your Yard: Landscaping for Curb Appeal and Joy
Simple changes that make your home the best-looking one on the block
By Trish Tipton
The exterior of your home creates the first and lasting impression for guests, neighbors, and potential buyers. Thoughtful landscaping is one of the best investments you can make, offering beauty today and return on investment whenever you sell.
Start with the basics: clean lines, defined edges, and healthy lawn. Crisp edges where grass meets garden beds instantly make even a simple landscape look polished and intentional. A layer of fresh mulch in beds eliminates weeds, retains moisture, and makes everything look neat. These foundational tasks cost very little but have enormous visual impact.
Plant with permanence in mind. Foundation plantings — shrubs and perennials along the front of the house — anchor the home to the landscape and should be chosen for their mature size, not their current size. Research plants appropriate for your climate and light conditions. Native plants are increasingly the smart choice because they require less water and care once established.
Seasonal color from annuals and containers fills the gaps between permanent plantings and can be changed seasonally for fresh impact. Window boxes, potted plants flanking the front door, and hanging baskets add warmth and welcome. Good outdoor lighting — low-voltage landscape path lights and an updated porch light — extends the visual impact of your landscaping into the evening hours.
