Transform Your Closet Into a Space You Love
Practical closet organization for any budget and any size
By Trish Tipton
Your closet is the first and last space you interact with every day, and a chaotic closet starts and ends each day with friction. A well-organized closet, by contrast, makes getting dressed feel easy and even enjoyable. The transformation doesn't require a custom closet system — though those are wonderful — it requires clear thinking about how you actually use the space.
Begin with a wardrobe edit. Pull everything out of the closet and sort into three categories: keep, donate, and discard. Apply the one-year rule to clothes: if you haven't worn it in a year, it goes — with exceptions for formal wear and truly sentimental pieces. Donate anything in good condition. Discard anything stained, broken, or unwearable.
Reorganize by how you actually use the space. Hang the items you wear most often at eye level and easy reach. Store less-used items higher or lower. Group by category — all pants together, all dresses together, all work shirts together — and within category, organize by color. This visual organization makes finding specific items effortless and makes the closet look polished.
Invest in consistent hangers — they're an inexpensive upgrade with dramatic visual impact. Slim velvet hangers are the gold standard: they're thin enough to double your hanging capacity, the velvet prevents clothes from slipping, and their uniformity makes the closet look organized even if nothing else has changed. Replace wire and plastic hangers as you can.
