Senior Housing Options: Understanding the Continuum
Independent living, assisted living, memory care — what each actually means

The senior housing landscape is broader and more varied than most families realize when they first begin researching it. Understanding the full spectrum of options — and what each actually provides — allows for better planning and more appropriate placement when the time comes.
Independent living communities offer apartment or cottage-style housing for seniors who are fully able to manage their own daily activities but who want a maintenance-free lifestyle, built-in social opportunities, and access to amenities like dining, fitness, and transportation. There's no care component — it's purely a lifestyle choice for active seniors who want community.
Assisted living provides housing plus support with activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, medication management, meals — for seniors who need some help but don't require the level of medical care provided in a nursing facility. Assisted living varies enormously in quality, amenities, and cost. Visit any facility you're considering multiple times, at different times of day, and talk to current residents and their families.
Memory care is a specialized form of assisted living designed for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. These communities feature secure environments, staff specifically trained in dementia care, and programming designed for cognitive engagement. Nursing homes or skilled nursing facilities provide the highest level of medical care and are appropriate for seniors with complex medical needs or those requiring rehabilitation after hospitalization.
