When Strength Isn't Enough

Trusting God in a World of Uncertainty

Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect. Ecclesiastes 9:11–12 reminds us that human effort, wisdom, and skill don't always guarantee success, safety, or provision. The fastest don't always win the race, and the strongest don't always prevail in battle. Even the wise may go hungry, and the skilled may not find favor. In this fallen world, unexpected circumstances—"time and chance"—touch us all, regardless of our preparation or ability. This passage humbles us, showing that no matter how well-equipped we are, we cannot control every outcome. We can do everything "right" and still face sudden loss or hardship, just as fish are caught in a net or birds in a snare. It's a warning against pride in our own strength and a call to acknowledge how fragile life can be. We don't know when our moment will come, and trying to control every detail will never be enough. But this truth is not meant to breed fear—it invites us to shift our trust from ourselves to the One who holds time in His hands. While the world is unpredictable, God is faithful. He sees the unseen, knows our days, and works all things for the good of those who love Him. Instead of chasing certainty through effort alone, we're invited to walk by faith, resting in the peace that comes from knowing our lives are in His sovereign care.

Today I Confess

When I come to the end of myself, God's strength begins. I lean into Him and find power I didn't know I had.
