Aloe vera is one of those remedies that earns its legendary status — it is genuinely one of the most effective topical treatments for sunburns, minor burns, skin irritation, and inflammation. A mature aloe plant is a remarkable first-aid resource that requires almost no care to maintain.

The gel inside aloe vera leaves contains polysaccharides that form a hydrating film on the skin surface, along with compounds that reduce inflammation, promote wound healing, and have mild antimicrobial activity. For sunburns specifically, the cooling relief is immediate and significant.

I keep an aloe plant on my kitchen windowsill and have used it hundreds of times over the years for everything from minor kitchen burns to chapped lips to irritated skin after shaving. It's one of the most useful plants a home can have.

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh aloe vera leaf (from a mature plant)
  • OR pure aloe vera gel (purchased, with no added alcohol or artificial fragrance)
  • Optional: a few drops of vitamin E oil for enhanced skin healing

How to Use

  1. 1To use fresh: cut a lower leaf from an aloe plant close to the base.
  2. 2Slice the leaf lengthwise and scoop out the clear gel with a spoon.
  3. 3Apply gel directly to affected skin and allow to absorb. Do not rinse.
  4. 4Refrigerate cut leaf or extra gel in a sealed container for up to one week.
  5. 5For sunburns: apply generously and repeat every few hours.
  6. 6For daily hydration: apply a thin layer as a light moisturizer or serum under your regular moisturizer.
