Chamomile-Lavender Sleep Tea
A gentle, fragrant tea that promotes relaxation and deeper sleep naturally.
I have a cup of this tea every evening at least thirty minutes before bed as part of my wind-down routine, and I have found it genuinely helpful for both falling asleep more quickly and sleeping more deeply. The ritual of making and slowly drinking a warm cup of tea is itself calming, independent of the herbs.
Chamomile contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to specific receptors in the brain that promote sleepiness and reduce anxiety. While it's not as potent as a pharmaceutical sleep aid, it's safe, gentle, and non-habit-forming — which makes it a sustainable nightly choice.
Lavender adds to chamomile's sedative properties and also smells absolutely lovely. If you have a lavender plant in the garden, fresh lavender flowers work even better than dried.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons dried chamomile flowers
- 1 teaspoon dried lavender buds (culinary-grade)
- 1 teaspoon dried passionflower (optional, enhances calming effect)
- 8 ounces just-boiled water
- 1 teaspoon raw honey
- Splash of warm milk (optional, adds tryptophan)
How to Use
- 1Place herbs in a tea infuser or directly in your favorite mug.
- 2Pour just-boiled water over herbs.
- 3Cover the mug to trap the essential oils.
- 4Steep for ten to fifteen minutes — longer than commercial tea bags for maximum benefit.
- 5Strain, add honey and warm milk if desired.
- 6Sip slowly while practicing quiet activities — no screens, soft lighting.
