Plaque buildup is the root cause of most common dental problems — cavities, gum disease, and tartar. Commercial whitening and plaque-control products often contain abrasives, peroxides, and synthetic detergents that can irritate sensitive gums and erode enamel with overuse. This gentle scrub uses food-safe ingredients to mechanically remove plaque and support gum health without those concerns.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive that has been used in dental care for over a century — it is genuinely effective at removing surface stains and plaque and has a mild alkalizing effect that helps neutralize the acid-producing bacteria responsible for cavities. Coconut oil provides the base and contributes its own antibacterial properties, particularly against Streptococcus mutans, the primary bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

Tea tree oil has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with specific research showing effectiveness against oral pathogens. Peppermint freshens breath and adds the familiar sensation that signals clean. Use this scrub one to two times per week rather than daily — the abrasiveness of baking soda is beneficial in moderation but excessive for daily use on enamel.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp solid coconut oil (slightly softened)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 drop Tea Tree essential oil
  • 1 drop Peppermint essential oil

How to Use

  1. 1Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl or jar to form a paste.
  2. 2Apply a small amount to your toothbrush.
  3. 3Brush teeth gently for two minutes, paying extra attention to the gumline and back molars.
  4. 4Spit into the trash — not down the drain, as coconut oil can solidify and clog pipes.
  5. 5Rinse mouth thoroughly with water.
  6. 6Use 1–2 times per week. Store remaining paste in a sealed jar at room temperature for up to one month.
