Ginger Steam for Congestion Relief
An old-fashioned steam treatment updated with ginger and eucalyptus for maximum relief.
Steam inhalation is one of the oldest remedies in the book, and for good reason — warm, moist air soothes inflamed nasal passages and helps loosen mucus in a way that no decongestant can fully replicate. Adding ginger and eucalyptus to the steam enhances the benefit significantly.
Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Eucalyptus contains cineole, which has been shown in clinical research to improve mucus clearance and reduce nasal symptoms. Together, they make a steam treatment that is both effective and genuinely pleasant.
I do this treatment twice a day at the height of a cold and find that it gives meaningful relief from congestion for one to two hours per session. Be careful with the heat — never use boiling water directly, and keep your face at a safe distance from the bowl.
Ingredients
- 4 cups hot (not boiling) water
- 5 to 6 thin slices fresh ginger root
- 3 to 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil (or 2 tablespoons dried eucalyptus leaves)
- 1 large towel
- Large heat-safe bowl
How to Use
- 1Bring water to a simmer, then remove from heat and let cool for two minutes.
- 2Add fresh ginger slices and allow to steep for three minutes.
- 3Add eucalyptus oil or leaves.
- 4Position your face eight to ten inches above the bowl — close enough to feel the steam, far enough to avoid burns.
- 5Drape a towel over your head and the bowl to trap steam.
- 6Breathe deeply through your nose for five to ten minutes.
