A Complete Bathroom Refresh for Under $500
High-impact updates that transform the space without a full renovation
By Trish Tipton
A full bathroom renovation can easily run $10,000 to $25,000 or more. But many bathrooms that feel dated or tired can be transformed dramatically for a fraction of that cost by focusing on the elements that have the most visual impact.
Start with the most visible updates. A new light fixture above the vanity is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make — outdated Hollywood bar lights or dated flush mounts can be replaced with a modern fixture for $50 to $200 and completely change the mood of the space. New faucet hardware, a new toilet seat, and updated cabinet hardware are similarly affordable updates with outsized visual impact.
Paint is powerful in bathrooms. A fresh coat in a considered color — perhaps a warm white, a soft sage, or a moody deep tone — instantly modernizes the space. If your vanity is solid wood but dated in color, painting it is a legitimate and lasting update. Sand, prime, and use a paint specifically formulated for furniture or cabinets for the most durable result.
A new shower curtain, coordinating bath mat, and fresh towels in a consistent color palette can make a bathroom feel like a completely different room for under $100. Add a simple plant, a clear canister for cotton balls, and a wooden tray for a spa-like feel. These finishing details are what make a bathroom look styled rather than just functional.
