The Weekend Kitchen Update: New Hardware Makes a World of Difference

How to choose, install, and style cabinet hardware like a designer

By Trish Tipton

Replacing cabinet hardware is one of the most affordable and transformative DIY projects a homeowner can undertake. A kitchen that feels builder-grade and dated can look like it was professionally designed simply by swapping out the pulls and knobs.

Choose hardware in a finish that works with your appliances and existing fixtures. Brushed nickel is universally complementary and works well in cool-toned kitchens. Warm brass and gold are having a major moment and add elegance and warmth to white or cream cabinets. Matte black creates a modern, graphic look that works beautifully with both light and dark cabinets.

For sizing, larger pulls on cabinet doors feel more substantial and current — many designers are now using pulls that span four to eight inches on standard doors. Measure the center-to-center distance between holes carefully and confirm it matches your new hardware before purchasing. If you're changing hole spacing, you'll need to fill existing holes with wood filler and drill new ones.

The installation itself is straightforward with a drill, a drill bit slightly smaller than your screw diameter, and a measuring tape. For multiple pulls of the same type, create a cardboard template to ensure consistent placement on every door. Take your time — even a slight variation in height or position will be noticeable across a bank of cabinets.
