Accountable to One Another

Why Correction Inside the Church Matters

January 8, 2025Author: Trish TiptonCategory: Discernment

This scripture reminds us that as believers, we're called to live differently—and part of that means holding each other accountable. "It isn't my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning" (1 Corinthians 5:12 NLT). We're not meant to be the world's judge, but we are expected to lovingly confront sin within the body of Christ. There's a big difference between being judgmental and standing for what's right. God's Word is clear that sin left unchecked can spread like yeast in dough. The passage continues, "God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, 'You must remove the evil person from among you'" (1 Corinthians 5:13 NLT). This isn't about kicking people out in anger—it's about protecting the spiritual health of the church. Sometimes we shy away from correction because it feels harsh, but if we truly love each other, we won't ignore things that are leading someone away from God. When done in humility and truth, judging righteously inside the church brings healing, not harm. It's part of walking in unity and honoring God's standard.

Today I Confess

God is near, and I am never alone. I choose to believe His Word and live in His truth.
