Arnica Gel for Bruises, Sprains, and Sore Muscles
A well-studied topical remedy that accelerates healing of bruises and reduces muscle soreness.
Arnica montana, a daisy-like mountain plant, has been used topically for pain and bruising for centuries in European folk medicine. Modern research has validated its effectiveness — multiple studies have found that topical arnica reduces pain and bruising from surgery, dental procedures, and soft tissue injuries more effectively than placebo.
Arnica contains helenalin and other sesquiterpene lactones that inhibit inflammatory pathways and stimulate white blood cell activity to clear bruising and tissue debris. It's my first choice for any bruise, sprain, or sore muscle that isn't an open wound.
Arnica should only be used topically, never internally (unless in the highly diluted homeopathic form). Do not apply to broken skin or open wounds. Keep away from eyes. It's widely available at natural food stores and pharmacies in both gel and cream forms.
