Epsom Salt Soak for Muscle Pain and Soreness

A simple, effective soak that relieves muscle soreness, draws out inflammation, and relaxes the whole body.

Epsom salt soaks are one of my most-used home remedies, both for targeted muscle soreness after physical activity and for whole-body relaxation after stressful or demanding days. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and while the research on transdermal magnesium absorption is mixed, the experiential evidence from countless people over centuries is consistent: these soaks help.

The warm water itself is therapeutic — heat increases circulation, relaxes muscle tissue, and reduces the sensation of pain. Whether the magnesium is absorbed through the skin or not, the warm soak with the ritual of self-care is genuinely beneficial. When I add lavender or eucalyptus essential oil, the aromatherapy benefit adds another layer of relief.

For targeted relief — a sore foot, an aching hand — a basin of warm Epsom salt water works beautifully without the need for a full bath.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate)
  • Warm bath water
  • Optional: 10 to 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • Optional: 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • Optional: 1/2 cup baking soda for softer water

How to Use

  1. 1Draw a warm (not hot) bath.
  2. 2Add Epsom salts and any optional additions and stir to dissolve.
  3. 3Soak for twenty to thirty minutes.
  4. 4Pat dry after soaking rather than rinsing, to leave the salts on your skin briefly.
  5. 5Follow with light moisturizer to prevent dryness.
  6. 6For foot soaks: add 1/2 cup Epsom salts to a basin of warm water and soak for twenty minutes.
