Commercial bug sprays are effective but often contain DEET, a synthetic chemical that many people prefer to avoid — especially on children. Fortunately, several essential oils have demonstrated real repellent activity in research settings, with citronella and lemongrass among the most studied.

Eucalyptus — specifically lemon eucalyptus oil — has received recognition from the CDC as an effective alternative to DEET for mosquito repellency. Combined with lavender, which repels mosquitoes, gnats, and flies, this blend covers a wide range of common outdoor pests.

Witch hazel serves as an excellent base because it helps the oils disperse evenly and has its own mild astringent and skin-calming properties. Shake before each use and reapply every one to two hours during outdoor activity, as natural repellents dissipate faster than synthetic ones.

Ingredients

  • 4 oz witch hazel or distilled water
  • 8 drops Citronella essential oil
  • 6 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 4 drops Eucalyptus essential oil

How to Use

  1. 1Combine all ingredients in a 4 oz glass spray bottle.
  2. 2Shake well before each use — oils will separate between applications.
  3. 3Spray onto exposed skin and clothing before going outdoors.
  4. 4Avoid eyes and mouth.
  5. 5Reapply every 1–2 hours during outdoor activity.
  6. 6Store in a cool, dark place. Use within 3 months.
