Castor Oil Pack (General Use)
A traditional castor oil pack applied with flannel and heat that supports detox, reduces inflammation, relieves pain, and promotes circulation.
Castor oil packs are one of the most time-honored and versatile natural remedies — used extensively in naturopathic medicine for liver support, lymphatic drainage, pain relief, and detoxification. The pack works by creating prolonged, deep contact between castor oil and the body tissue, enhanced by the heat that drives absorption.
The mechanism centers on ricinoleic acid — castor oil's primary fatty acid — which has documented anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and lymphagogue (lymph-stimulating) effects. Applied to the abdomen over the liver, it supports hepatic detoxification and lymphatic circulation. Applied to joints or areas of pain, it reduces local inflammation and provides meaningful pain relief.
A good flannel cloth retains the oil well and provides gentle compression. The plastic wrap or towel over the flannel protects clothing and surfaces while retaining heat. A heating pad over the top drives absorption deeper into tissue and makes the twenty to forty-five minute treatment genuinely relaxing.
Ingredients
- Castor oil (cold-pressed, hexane-free recommended)
- Flannel cloth
- Plastic wrap or old towel
- Heating pad (optional but recommended)
How to Use
- 1Saturate a piece of flannel cloth with castor oil — it should be well-soaked but not dripping.
- 2Place the saturated flannel on the target area (abdomen over liver, affected joint, or area of pain).
- 3Cover with plastic wrap or an old towel to protect clothing and retain heat.
- 4Place a heating pad over the top on a comfortable warm setting.
- 5Rest with the pack in place for 20–45 minutes.
- 6Remove and cleanse the skin with warm water and a mild soap. The flannel can be stored in a sealed bag in the refrigerator and reused multiple times — add oil as needed.
