DIY Vapor Chest Rub
A natural alternative to store-bought vapor rubs, made with coconut oil and essential oils.
Commercial vapor rubs work well, but their ingredient lists are often long and include petroleum-derived products. This homemade version uses coconut oil as a base and pure essential oils to create a clean, effective chest rub that soothes congestion and coughing at night.
Eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils both contain compounds that create a cooling sensation and help open airways. Lavender adds a calming quality that aids sleep when congestion is making rest difficult.
This recipe keeps at room temperature for months in a sealed jar. Apply a small amount to the chest and throat at bedtime and cover with a warm cloth. Note: keep away from eyes and mucous membranes, and do not apply to children under age two.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets (for a firmer consistency) or use extra coconut oil
- 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- Small glass jar for storage
How to Use
- 1Melt coconut oil and beeswax together in a double boiler or microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each.
- 2Remove from heat and allow to cool for two to three minutes — do not let it solidify.
- 3Add essential oils and stir thoroughly.
- 4Pour into glass jar and allow to cool completely before covering.
- 5Apply a small amount to chest and upper back at bedtime. Massage in gently.
- 6Cover with a warm cloth or pajama top to hold heat against skin.
