Commercial toilet cleaning products often contain some of the harshest chemicals found in any household cleaner. These DIY fizzing tablets clean effectively through the reaction of baking soda and citric acid — when they hit water, they release carbon dioxide bubbles that physically agitate and lift deposits from the bowl while the castile soap and essential oils do the cleaning and disinfecting work.

Baking soda neutralizes acids and deodorizes, while citric acid dissolves mineral deposits and hard water stains that are the most stubborn toilet bowl problems. Castile soap provides the surfactant action that lifts and removes grime. Lavender and lemon essential oils add antimicrobial properties along with a genuinely pleasant scent.

Make a batch and store in a glass jar on the back of the toilet for immediate access. One tablet per use is sufficient for maintenance cleaning. The fizzing action requires no scrubbing for light soil — simply drop, wait a few minutes, and flush.

Ingredients

  • Baking soda
  • Citric acid
  • Castile soap
  • Essential oils (lavender and lemon recommended)
  • Ice cube tray (for molding)
  • Mixing bowl and spoon
  • Glass jar with lid (for storage)

How to Use

  1. 1Mix baking soda and citric acid in a bowl in a 2:1 ratio (e.g., 1 cup baking soda to 1/2 cup citric acid).
  2. 2Add a small amount of castile soap and essential oils and mix quickly — the mixture will begin to fizz if wet, so work fast.
  3. 3Press firmly into an ice cube tray and allow to harden for several hours or overnight.
  4. 4Pop tablets out and store in a sealed glass jar.
  5. 5Drop one tablet into the toilet bowl and allow to fizz for 3–5 minutes.
  6. 6Swish with a brush and flush. Repeat as needed.
