Soap scum and hard water mineral deposits on glass shower doors are stubborn problems that most commercial cleaners address with strong acids or surfactants that leave chemical residue and strong fumes in an enclosed space. This two-ingredient spray works through the same acid chemistry — distilled white vinegar's acetic acid dissolves the calcium and magnesium deposits that make up hard water stains and the soap scum that bonds with them.

The key is using 5% distilled white vinegar, which is the standard grocery store concentration. Heating the vinegar slightly before spraying or allowing the spray to sit for a few minutes before wiping increases its effectiveness on heavier buildup. A microfiber cloth provides the best streak-free finish on glass.

For heavy soap scum buildup, apply the spray and let it sit for 5–10 minutes before wiping. Regular weekly use prevents heavy buildup from forming. Avoid using on natural stone tile surrounds — the acid in vinegar can etch marble and limestone.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup 5% distilled white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • Spray bottle
  • Microfiber cloth or paper towel

How to Use

  1. 1Add vinegar and water to a spray bottle using a funnel.
  2. 2Shake gently before use.
  3. 3Spray generously onto glass shower doors.
  4. 4Allow to sit for 2–5 minutes for light buildup, or up to 10 minutes for heavier deposits.
  5. 5Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth using circular motions.
  6. 6Buff dry for a streak-free finish. Avoid use on natural stone surfaces.
