Fennel seeds have been used as a digestive remedy across many cultures for thousands of years, and they are genuinely effective. Anethole, the primary compound in fennel, has antispasmodic properties that relax the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, releasing trapped gas and relieving the cramping and bloating associated with it.

This tea works quickly — often within fifteen to twenty minutes — which makes it a reliable first-response remedy for uncomfortable post-meal bloating. It's also safe for most people, including pregnant women in moderate amounts, though you should check with your healthcare provider if you have specific concerns.

Lightly crushing the seeds before steeping releases more of the essential oils and makes a significantly stronger, more effective tea. A simple mortar and pestle works perfectly, or you can press the seeds with the bottom of a heavy glass.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 8 ounces boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

How to Use

  1. 1Lightly crush fennel seeds with a mortar and pestle or the bottom of a glass.
  2. 2Place crushed seeds in a tea infuser or directly in a cup.
  3. 3Pour boiling water over seeds.
  4. 4Cover and steep for ten minutes.
  5. 5Strain if seeds were placed directly in the cup.
  6. 6Sip slowly after meals or when bloating occurs.
