Ginger-Peppermint Digestive Tea
A soothing, effective tea for upset stomachs, nausea, bloating, and after-meal discomfort.
Ginger and peppermint are two of the most well-researched plants for digestive support, and together they make a tea that is both effective and genuinely pleasant to drink. Ginger has been shown to accelerate gastric emptying and reduce nausea; peppermint relaxes smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, relieving cramping and spasm.
I keep both of these herbs dried in my pantry and make this tea at the first sign of any digestive discomfort. It's particularly helpful after an overly rich meal, at the beginning of stomach illness, or for the general bloating and sluggishness that many people experience regularly.
For an even stronger effect, use fresh ginger root — slice three or four thin coins and simmer in two cups of water for ten minutes before adding the peppermint.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon dried ginger root or 3 to 4 slices fresh ginger
- 1 teaspoon dried peppermint leaves
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
- Squeeze of fresh lemon (optional)
How to Use
- 1Place ginger and peppermint in a tea infuser or directly in a cup.
- 2Pour boiling water over herbs.
- 3Steep for ten minutes, covered, to preserve the volatile oils in the peppermint.
- 4Strain and add honey and lemon if desired.
- 5Sip slowly after meals or at the first sign of digestive discomfort.
- 6Safe to drink two to three cups daily.
