Apple Cider Vinegar Digestive Tonic

A before-meal tonic that supports healthy digestion and reduces bloating.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been used as a digestive aid for centuries, and there is emerging scientific support for its benefits. The acetic acid in ACV may help stimulate the production of digestive enzymes and stomach acid, which many people — especially as they age — have in insufficient quantities.

Low stomach acid is actually far more common than excess stomach acid, despite popular belief, and it can cause many of the same symptoms: bloating, heartburn, and incomplete digestion. A small amount of ACV before a meal may support more thorough digestion.

Always use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the 'mother' — the cloudy sediment at the bottom that contains beneficial bacteria and enzymes. Bragg is the most widely available brand. Never drink ACV undiluted — it can damage tooth enamel and esophageal tissue.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with mother
  • 8 ounces warm or room-temperature water
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional, to soften tartness)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, boosts metabolism)

How to Use

  1. 1Mix apple cider vinegar into water and stir well.
  2. 2Add honey if desired and stir until dissolved.
  3. 3Drink ten to fifteen minutes before a main meal.
  4. 4Use a straw if possible to minimize contact with tooth enamel.
  5. 5Rinse your mouth with plain water after drinking.
  6. 6Start with one teaspoon if you're sensitive, gradually increasing to one tablespoon.
