Zinc Lozenges at the First Sign of a Cold
The research-backed protocol for using zinc to reduce cold duration significantly.
Zinc is one of the few cold remedies with genuine clinical evidence behind it. Multiple studies have found that zinc lozenges, started within twenty-four hours of the first cold symptoms and used consistently throughout the illness, can reduce the duration of the common cold by an average of thirty to forty percent.
The mechanism is that zinc ions released by the lozenges in the throat may interfere with the ability of rhinovirus to replicate, slowing the progression of infection. The key is starting early — zinc doesn't help much if you wait until you're fully sick — and using lozenges rather than tablets, so the zinc ions are released directly in the throat where the virus initially takes hold.
Not all zinc supplements are effective for this purpose — look for zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges with at least 13mg of elemental zinc per lozenge. Some popular zinc supplements contain additives like citric acid that bind zinc ions and reduce efficacy.
Ingredients
- Zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges (13mg or more elemental zinc per lozenge)
- Do not use zinc sulfate formulations — evidence shows these are not effective
How to Use
- 1Begin using zinc lozenges within 24 hours of noticing first cold symptoms.
- 2Take one lozenge every two to three hours while awake — consistency matters.
- 3Allow the lozenge to dissolve slowly in your mouth, keeping it toward the back of your throat.
- 4Do not chew or swallow — the slow dissolution is how zinc ions are released where needed.
- 5Continue for the duration of the cold.
- 6Do not use for more than fourteen days continuously, and do not use zinc nasal sprays (which can cause permanent loss of smell).
